Bayonetta 10th Anniversary Edition
Bayonetta is as fast-paced and stylish as ever in its debut on the PS4!
Bayonetta has received a fair amount of attention since its launched for its over-the-top style, quick pace, and satisfying combo mechanics. When the game was announced for the PS4, with promises of a sharper resolution, smaller loading times, and a much improved frame rate, many fans were optimistic but concerned, the horrors of the PS3 port still at the forefront of their minds. As a fan of the series, I’m happy to say there is no need for concern; Sega has delivered on their promise, and the result is glorious.
The 10th anniversary edition of the game will look very familiar to anyone who has played it before, but a few important changes will surprise, and hopefully delight, fans. The frame rate and resolution have been increased significantly, from 30 to 60 fps, and reaching as high as 4k resolution for PS4 owners. The visual impact of these changes alone may be worth the price of admission for some fans, as they make the game nearly feel like a completely different experience. In addition, loading times have been reduced to the point where they are nearly removed. Loading screens are so short, there’s barely time to manage a single combo, and transitions from custscene to gameplay are so smooth, there’s no pause at all.
If there is any negative comment to make about the game, it’s simply that it hasn’t changed much. The resolution and frame rate have been improved, but the graphics still belong to the last generation. As a result, despite the higher resolution, Bayonetta still shows its age when looked at too closely.
That having been said, if you’re a fan of the game, and don’t mind the occasional reminder that Bayonetta is a decade old, the smooth frame rate, HD resolution and nearly very minimal loading times make playing through the game yet again an absolute joy.
