Lapis x Labyrinth Review
Lapis x Labyrinth is a dungeon-diving action RPG where you stack your party members and a part of a white knuckle treasure hunting adventure!
You control up to four chibi-style characters where you can swap between them on the fly to unleash several different attacks to defeat what lurks in the labyrinth.
When you first start the game, you are greeted with three save slots. Choose the one you want and you are on your way! You are then tasked with creating two adventurers, yourself, and a member of your team.
You can choose from a multitude of characters to be your first adventurer. You can choose from Hunter, Necromancer, Shielder, Maid, Gunner, Witch, Destroyer, or Bishop. You can then give them a name, customize their voice, hairstyle and hair color. You can also change these three attributes at any time by going to the butler in the game.
After you create your character, you are told about the quaint little town in a little land far away. Where you are told about a radiant Golden Forest. The source is a magnificent golden tree hidden within a labyrinth of trees. Many an adventurer came with dreams of riches upon reaching the center, but none have yet to succeed.
The town you arrive in was established at the entrance of the labyrinth as a base of operations where all adventurers could gather and try their luck. Sadly, adventurers that used to come in droves, have dwindled down to nothing, the town abandoned and forgotten.
It has appeared once more, seemingly waiting for the last adventurer to arrive, where it then would just simply be written from history, forgotten.
As soon as this explanation ends, you are thrust directly into a tutorial of sorts on how to play the game. It shows you exactly what you need to press to do certain moves and does a good job of doing it.
You then meet the mayor of this small town, which surprisingly is a little girl. You learn that she sent out an invitation to the Adventurers Guild and seemingly you were the only one to answer the call. She gives you a run down of what has happened and hopes with news of your success of traversing the labyrinth, it would bring back the spirit of Labyrinth exploration (hold onto your butts as I will say ‘labyrinth’ so many more times in this review…).
You then find yourself outside of a house and basically guides you through the general loop of the game!
- Entering the Labyrinth!
First, head to over to Guild Co. to pick up a quest. After you get a quest, speak with the lift operator.
- Recruit New Adventurers!
You can also recruit new party memebers at Guild Co.! You can have up to 4 memebers in a dungeon!
- Equip Items!
Prepare for your expedition by equipping gear in the Equip menu.
From there, its STACK, RAID, AND GET PAID!! You will quickly realize that you get a lot of gems, crystals, materials when you defeat the monsters that lurk in the labyrinth. There are three things you must keep in mind when exploring the labyrinth. Voltage, Treasure Combo, and FEVER TIME!
In Fever Time you become invincible. Which allows you really start raking in the points and you have a much better chance of getting some rare loot. You can activate fever mode by just wailing on the baddies in the Labyrinth and once you reach enough, you automatically start Fever Time. The more times you activate Fever Time, the better your score at the end of the level!
The loop of getting a quest, exploring the labyrinth, get loot, and equip said loot is very addictive. The new story scenes after you defeat every new quest route are fun and entertaining.
Once you get far enough you will get access to the Lunch Lady which allows you to purchase Lunch boxes which will grant a variety of buffs, once per floor. If you do not use them during the dungeon, they will spoil when you leave and you have to buy it again!
The next thing to open up is the Trader. Here you can unlock features or exchange items! If you only buy one thing from the Trader, let it be the Gear Cost Up levels that you can buy in various increments. Those being 5000, 7500, 10,000, 15,000, 25,000 gold.
These allow you to equip better gear with a higher cost associated to them. You will be hitting this limit quite a bit in the first few routes.
The next one you unlock is the Foundry! Which allows you to customize and enhance your weapons and armor. Also, enchant the items to make them even better than they were before!
The Foundry allows you to customize the mind boggling amount of armor and weapons in the game to tackle the over 100 different monsters that lurk in the depths of the Labyrinth!
This game offers a whole lot for the amazing price of $29.99. The amount of content in this game is staggering! There is so much in this game I cannot fit it into this review. Which is why it took me so long to finish!
This game is a must buy for dungeon platformer fans, loot grinding, really just all around very fun game to play.
This game was reviewed on a Nintendo Switch, in both docked and undocked mode.
